PSAAG Workshop 2022
Coimbra
As academic “normality” is slowly returning, we look back on our Annual Workshop 2022 that, much to the delight of the organizers and participants, could be held in presence for the first time since the pandemic.
The workshop was organized by Susana Jorge and Isabel Cruz from the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra, Portugal. The workshop addressed the theme Digitization in the Public Sector: Opportunities and challenges for Accounting and Accountability.
Two keynote speakers kicked off the exchange at our traditional event where the aim is to get together and discuss pressing issues on accounting and accountability in the public services without the formality of presenting and discussing papers.
On the first day of the workshop, Helen Margrets (Professor of Internet d Society at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford) spoke about “Let’s Start from Here: Data Science & Artificial Intelligence from a public sector perspective”. Subsequently, participants went into breakout sessions, which were divided into three groups. The first group dealt with digital transformation and challenges of accounting (data procedure), discussing the topic from the perspective of an accounting professional. The second group focused on the topic of digital transformation and challenges for decision making from the perspective of a digital user. The third group dealt with digital transformation and challenges of accountability from the perspective of data reporting.
Ricardo Pontes Lourenço (PwC Portugal, Tax Technology Partner) heralded the second day of the workshop with his keynote on “The Impacts of the digital Transformation on the reporting requirements by tax authorities”. This was followed by breakout sessions in which the groups were divided up again in a similar form as on the first day. A plenary session concluded with the main challenges for accounting and accountability in the public sector.
