IRSPM Conference 2024
Tampere, 16-18 April 2024
The PSAAG organized its Special Interest Group (SIG) Panel on Accounting and Accountability at the IRSPM Conference 2024 in Tampere, 16-18 April 2024 around the topic “Decoding Hybrid Futures – Accounting and Accountability Perspectives in Public Governance and Management”.
The PSAAG’s key event in the public management field, the IRSPM Annual Conference in Tampere was an illuminating confluence of minds and ideas. With a total of seven sessions and 27 papers, the panel covered an array of research issues, including:
-
the promise and perils of algorithmic governance,
-
accountability within sustainability practices,
-
cognitive biases in decision-making,
-
performance information on public services, and
-
practices of auditing and budgeting.
Paper presenters, co-authors, and panel participants engaged in a rich debate, pondering the role of accounting in creating public value in an age marked by hybridity, and sparking discussions on integrity and accountability in the digital age.
Looking back at the previous week, we are grateful to all of you who contribute to the vibrant community that came together, for the knowledge exchanged, and the professional bonds forged. It is these events that drive our community forward.
As every year, amidst the rigorous schedule of the conference, there is an evening that stands out for its relaxed ambiance – the informal SIG dinner. This event is a tradition that offers a delightful culinary experience and an opportunity for colleagues to unwind and engage in spirited conversations outside of the formal conference setting. We mingle and foster connections that go beyond professional interests. It is not merely a meal, but a celebration of shared passions and the collective journey of the PSAAG members.

At Tampere, we introduced our PSAAG Lifetime Achievement Award, that honors pioneers in public service accounting, and reflects our deep respect for their academic journey.
However, with a heavy heart we must announce that the first-time ever PSAAG Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Prof. Irvine Lapsley, passed away before he could receive the award at the IRSPM Conference in Tampere. We take solace in the fact that we could inform him about the award before his passing.Irvine was an authentic thought leader, a prolific scholar, a great mentor, and a kind colleague.
Through his dedication and commitment, he shaped and nurtured the international public sector accounting scholarly community, contributing to making it inclusive, rigorous and vibrant.
Gone, but never forgotten.
